What is your reaction to this question?I listened intently to a discussion on this very subject today. I thought it would be a great topic to stimulate your "grey matter" and get you searching for your feelings.
Now, before you read any more of this blog, I would like you to take a few minutes and think about your position on this question. Jot down a few notes and then come back to finish reading my comments - OK.
Ready now?
Okay, let's start with a female's point of view.
The way I see it there will be women who believe they can do a "man's job" just as well if not better than many men.
There will also be many women who believe there are jobs better suited for women and other jobs better suited for men.
Now for the man's point of view:
Many men may believe the woman's place is in the kitchen or taking care of the kids. They feel women should continue doing jobs they are capable of doing and suited for.
Other men will have the opinion that women are just as capable as men and should be welcomed in any position.
Where do you stand on this question? What does this have to do with personal development anyway?
As I listened to numerous individuals giving their opinions both for and against women taking on jobs traditionally held by men, a few thoughts kept pounding away at the conscious level.
My first thought was how angry others get when someone expresses their opinion. I am of the belief that everyone is entitled to their opinion. If I disagree with them, I am happy to give them the opportunity to sway me with logical discussion.
I was amazed at how strongly some people held on to their beliefs and refuse to accept any alternatives.
I am reminded of the analogy of the tree that bends with the wind remains rooted.
The second thought that occurred to me is how important it is for us to keep a journal and record our beliefs. This is the only way we can see what makes us tick. With an understanding of our current beliefs can we make decisions on which ones support our life and which ones hinder our progress.
The third and most important thought occurring to me is that
"we are only limited by our beliefs."Simply, if we believe we can do something, then for sure, we will do it.
It is no longer a question of gender. It is no longer a question of whether something is a man's job or a woman's job. It is now merely a question of whether you can do it or not.
When I look at all the media hype about the "challenge of the sexes" I question whether these reporters have any idea of the potential of the human mind in this century. Notice I said "human mind" and not a man's or woman's mind.
I respect everyone's opinion regarding the question of what a woman is capable of doing or suited to do. I realize some women will be threatened by another women who can perform as well as a man. I also understand some men are threatened when a woman does anything traditionally believed to be exclusively limited to men.
In this age, many women have become extremely successful in positions previously believed to be for men only.
It is interesting to listen to comments from fellow males when a female race car driver wins an event, or someone like Michelle Wie competes in a "man's" golf tournament.
It is also very intriguing to hear the opposing comments from the females. Some are proud of women who excel and others may choose to put these women down.
Realize this subject is a great way to get inside your mind, examine your beliefs, grow and change in what ever way makes you happy.
Nothing in life is either good or bad. It is only your thinking that makes it so.
Personally, I choose to embrace the concept that anyone can achieve great things in this lifetime.
I raised my daughter to be self-reliant. I am proud of her in so many ways. She is feminine and beautiful, yet she had the fortitude to go out and buy her own home and undertake all the necessary interior renovations on her own.
She was educated to believe in herself, her abilities and the enormous potential available to anyone who believes it to be there for the taking.
Have you now learned something about yourself?
Assuming you wrote out your response as I requested, then read the rest of this blog, I can only hope I have opened your eyes to the huge range of possibilities that exist for you.
My intent is not to sway you to believe one way or another whether a woman can do a man's job. Rather, my intent is only to get you thinking, understanding yourself a little better and perhaps even becoming aware of any self-limiting beliefs that may be stopping you.
A great habit to acquire is consciously catching your thoughts and beliefs and recording them in a journal. Look at them with interest. Realize these beliefs are what shape your life. These beliefs either empower you to succeed or stop you cold in your tracks and fill your consciousness with fear, doubt, worry and anxiety.
Nothing in life exists without first having the thought. Nothing!
Post your comments and share your thoughts with others. Your opinions are not right or wrong - they are merely your opinions and you are entitled to them.
That's it for today.
Regards,
Gene
